Predators Survive a Late Halloween Scare to Maintain their 100% Start.

Robert Fleming

The U17 Predators survived a late enslaught to take the points, in a Thriller away at Goring Reds.

Pinewood started brightly in the first half playing downhill on a pitch that sloped dramatically from left to right.
Early possession and passing was good and the game was played on the front foot. But it was clear from the initial exchanges that this would be their toughest test of the season so far.

Within the first 10mins the chances started to be created by the Predators as they looked again to be dominant. Corners were, once again, a big threat and the first chance came from a devilish delivery by Mason that was met by Alex who made superb contact with his header but directed it an inch the wrong side of the post. Just 2 minutes later, after another 2 corners, Vinny nearly opened the scoring with demon of a volley. As the ball was cleared to him just outside the box he had the time and composure to take a touch and set it for a stike that would have been a contender for goal of the season, had the curl not taken it agonisingly away from goal.

However, Goring were comfortable on the ball too and played some good football. Their best chance came when an overload allowed them to break clean through on goal. Only a superb save from the left foot of Logan in ghoul (Sorry about that one) denied them taking the lead on 17mins.

Jay was brought on after 20mins with instructions to get wings into play more and he had an immediate impact. 25mins had elapsed when he played a pinpoint throughball for Kai to run on to. Kai took a clever touch to wrong foot the defender and placed his left foot shot comfortably inside the near post to finally take a deserved lead.

Pinewood created more chances in the first half with both forward players, Alex and Harry W, seeing efforts flash wide of the goal. Going into half time it seemed like a 1 - 0 lead would not be enough, as Pinewood literally had an uphill battle to come.

In the second half the game was an even contest, with Goring having more of the ball and creating more chances. Logan's handling was good and he was quick off his line to bravely smother twice at the feet of the onrushing attackers. But Goring were repeatedly breaking through the defensive line only to see their efforts on goal miss the target.

With 20 minutes left Alex was chasing down a long throw by Max. His presence caused panic between the defender and goalkeeper who both missed the ball, leaving Alex able to ghost in behind them and smash the ball into the empty net.

At 2 - 0 the game looked more comfortable and Kai had a 1 on 1 with the Goring keeper, who pulled off a hell of a save to deny Kai a second of the game. Both goalkeepers had good games and kept the score down and the next goal was an important one.

Defensively Bartek had dealt with everything that came his way. His no nonsense clearances and strength on the ball earned him the player of the match. But having put in a shift he was replaced for a rest with only a minute or 2 of normal time remaining.

As the clock ticked past 90 minutes Pinewoods efforts of playing uphill started to show in their decision making and a rash challenge in the box by Leo lead to the award of a penalty to Goring. The spot kick was put away and although Logan dived the right way, the ball was hit low and squeezed in for 2 - 1. The drama didnt end there as injury time looked like it might turn into a nightmare for the away team.

Another mis-timed tackle gave Goring a chance to deliver from a dangerous area and with 2 of the best Predators defenders off the pitch, it looked like they might snatch a late draw at the death. The delivery was a good one and, after a heart-stopping scramble, the ball was eventually cleared and to the enormous relief of Pinewood, the final whistle blew.

It was a thrilling game and having been 2 - 0 up after 90 minutes, Pinewood will shockingly consider themselves lucky to escape with all 3 points.
