The Magnificent Seven in a Clash with Ashridge.

Robert Fleming

A Show of Intent from the U17 Predators as they reverse the result from last season.

It is 2 wins and 6 points from the Predators opening 2 games. They emulated the good form from the opening day away win, with a comfortable 7 - 0 win at home against Ashridge Park Royals.

The Predators learned from their slow start in the last game and were straight into their work this time. Playing into the bright sunshine at Edgbarrow in the first half was not ideal but they played on the front foot with some slick, intricate passing and intensity in the press. Ashridge were defending deep and although Pinewood dominated possession in the first 10mins there wasn't an easy way through the defence.

The deadlock was broken early when, having won a corner after 12minutes, Max delivered the set peice to the perfect spot for Leo to head it in from 5 yards. And just 4 minutes later the lead was extended when Max latched on to a ball, cleverly diverted into his path by Kai, and unleashed a breathtaking strike into to top righthand corner of the goal that no keeper would have saved.

Pinewood were a threat from corners all game and made it count as the 3rd goal was a carbon copy of the first, this time Alex's towering header was superbly directed past the helpless keeper.

With Ashridge having made a tactical switch after half an hour to try to gain a foothold in the middle of the pitch, the first half was rounded off in fine style when Max again turned provider. After a series of smart passes, Pinewood quickly moved the ball across the pitch where Max laid the ball into the path of Amir who hit a suptuous shot that curled away from the diving goalie and again found the top right corner.

Half time and Pinewood were 4 - 0 to the good, all 4 very good goals. It could have been more after some great interplay between Kai and Max in the right corner allowed Max to hit a ball that flashed across the goal and was only inches from being converted by Alex's disparing lunge. However, thanks to the effort and composure from Harry, Jay and especially the oustanding Vinny in the centre, Pinewood made it to the break with a clean sheet.

In the second half the challenge was always going to be keeping up the intensity and Ashridge enjoyed more of the ball as the half started. But as always Logan was quick off his line and always on hand to clean up if the ball did get past the solid defensive unit. Eventually, having no subs to call on began to tell as Ashridge put in a massive effort to get back in the game, and finally began to tire.

The game was wrapped in a 20 minute spell that first saw Jay Thump in a shot from outside the box after the ball popped out to him following a scramble from another corner. Then the captain Alex took control when he hammered home a shot from 25 yards that was past the keeper before he could move and then rounded off a fine hatrick with another superbly judged header from another set piece, this time a free kick from just inside the Ashridge half. The only blemish on his "Player of the Match" perfromance was the booking for his overexuberant celebration.

It ended as a harsh scoreline on Ashridge who played with passion, fight and energy dispite starting with only 11 players and finishing the game with fewer due to injuries. They deserve a lot of credit for playing to the end and being gracious in defeat.

The Predators will be aware that there are tougher tests ahead, but you could certainly tell they enjoyed this moment and have a great team spirit.
